Punjab Police Crack Down on Bitcoin Scams with 18 Arrests
In a significant development, the Punjab Police in India have arrested 18 individuals in connection with a Bitcoin scam that allegedly defrauded investors of millions of rupees.
The arrests were made after a raid on a call center in the city of Ludhiana, where the suspects were allegedly operating the scam. According to the police, the suspects lured victims into investing in Bitcoin through phone calls and social media messages.
The scam reportedly worked by convincing victims to deposit money into Bitcoin wallets provided by the suspects. The suspects then allegedly used advanced software to manipulate the value of the Bitcoin in the victims’ wallets, giving the illusion of increased profits. However, when victims attempted to withdraw their funds, they were unable to do so.
Initial investigations suggest that the scam generated revenue worth crores of rupees (tens of millions of Indian rupees) for the suspects. The police have seized computers, mobile phones, and other electronic devices from the call center during the raid.
The arrested individuals hail from various states across India, including Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh. They face charges of cheating, forgery, and conspiracy.
The Punjab Police have urged investors to exercise caution while dealing in cryptocurrency markets, advising them to verify the authenticity of investment opportunities before investing. The police also encouraged victims of the Bitcoin scam to come forward and file complaints.
This crackdown by the Punjab Police highlights the increasing prevalence of cryptocurrency-related scams in India. The government has recently taken steps to regulate the cryptocurrency market, but scammers continue to find loopholes to exploit unsuspecting investors.
