Facebook’s Zuckerberg Donates $100 Million to Hospitals for Bitcoin Research
San Francisco, California – March 8, 2023
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has donated $100 million to a consortium of hospitals across the United States to fund research into the potential applications of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in healthcare.
The donation, which was announced today at a press conference at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, will be used to establish the Bitcoin Healthcare Research Consortium (BHRC). The BHRC will bring together researchers from leading hospitals and universities to explore how Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies can improve patient care, reduce costs, and increase access to healthcare services.
“Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have the potential to revolutionize healthcare,” said Zuckerberg. “They can make healthcare more efficient, more transparent, and more affordable. This donation will help us to unlock the potential of these technologies and improve the lives of people around the world.”
The BHRC will focus on three main areas of research:
* Patient care: How can Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies be used to improve patient care? For example, could Bitcoin be used to pay for medical treatment, or to provide patients with access to telemedicine services?
* Cost reduction: How can Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies be used to reduce healthcare costs? For example, could Bitcoin be used to streamline insurance claims processing, or to reduce the cost of prescription drugs?
* Access to healthcare: How can Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies be used to increase access to healthcare services? For example, could Bitcoin be used to provide financial assistance to patients who cannot afford traditional healthcare insurance?
The BHRC will be led by a team of researchers from Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, and Harvard University. The consortium will also collaborate with industry partners such as Coinbase and Circle.
“We are grateful for Mark Zuckerberg’s generous donation,” said Dr. David Feinberg, CEO of CVS Health. “This donation will help us to accelerate our research into the potential applications of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in healthcare. We believe that these technologies have the potential to transform the way we deliver care to our patients.”
The BHRC is a major step forward in the development of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in healthcare. The consortium’s research will help to unlock the potential of these technologies and improve the lives of people around the world.
