Bitcoin Twitter Hack: A Multi-Million Dollar Scam
On July 15, 2020, Twitter experienced a major security breach that allowed hackers to gain access to the accounts of numerous high-profile individuals, including celebrities, politicians, and businesses. Among the hacked accounts were those of former US President Barack Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden, and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.
The hackers used the compromised accounts to send out fraudulent tweets promoting a Bitcoin scam. The tweets claimed that the individuals were giving away free Bitcoin to their followers. To receive the free Bitcoin, users were instructed to send a small amount of Bitcoin to a specified wallet address.
The scam was highly successful, with over 100,000 Bitcoin transactions being made to the hackers’ wallet addresses. According to estimates, the hackers stole over $120 million worth of Bitcoin from unsuspecting victims.
Twitter quickly responded to the hack by locking down the affected accounts and resetting their passwords. The company also launched an investigation to determine how the hackers gained access to the accounts.
The FBI is currently investigating the hack, and it is possible that criminal charges will be filed against those responsible. However, it is unlikely that the stolen Bitcoin will be recovered.
